These are the Internet of Things (IoT), Edge Computing, Big Data and Artificial Intelligence (AI):<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>The Internet of Things (IoT) <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consists of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">physical objects that have technology embedded (such as sensors or software). These devices are connected to a network or the cloud to transmit and exchange the data generated. IoT devices are not limited to an industry by any means. In fact, IoT is already widely applied in various fields &#8211; ranging from smart factories and <a href=\"https:\/\/avinton.com\/en\/blog\/2021\/03\/smart-agriculture-ai\/\">smart agriculture<\/a> to autonomous driving in the automotive industry and smart home automation for end users.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Edge computing<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is related to IoT, as it solves the typical cloud-related challenges of network congestion and latency. &#8220;Edge&#8221; indicates that complex tasks aren\u2019t performed on a remote cloud, but on the &#8220;edge of the network&#8221;. With edge computing, AI-powered data analysis or image classification takes place on the actual smart device (such as an Edge AI Camera) which allows for bandwidth reduction and real-time inferences. Especially in situations in which every millisecond counts &#8211; such as the safety of autonomous vehicles or worker\u2019s safety on shop floors &#8211; speed is of the essence.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Big Data<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> describes the systematic approach of turning data into actual business value. While the amount of data available to companies is dramatically increasing, so is the number of different sources and formats. In order to derive business intelligence from such data, it first has to be collected, accumulated, processed, and analyzed.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Artificial Intelligence (AI)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a wide-ranging field in computer science. When the whole world is changing, it\u2019s crucial to adapt in order to survive.<\/strong> That\u2019s why established corporations need to ask themselves not only how they handle this challenge, but also how quickly &#8211; because when it comes to innovation, speed and agility are crucial.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Established companies do have some major advantages over small startups, after all: they have an existing large customer base, broad technological and industry know-how, human resources, and financial assets. But in the era of digital transformation, there\u2019s another tremendously valuable asset: data. It profoundly changes the way companies work. <strong>On an operational level, AI technologies like machine learning can improve the efficiency of processes and significantly reduce the costs of production.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Technologies like edge computing allow AI devices to perform complex tasks right on the spot, even when there is no network connection. This is a major advantage over conventional cloud-based approaches. The Japanese insurance company <a href=\"https:\/\/justincase.jp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">JustInCase<\/a>, for example, aims to make insurance services more accessible. They allow for insurance contracts to be concluded right on their smartphone app. The app also connects to the smartphone\u2019s built-in sensors. If AI detects an active lifestyle, users are rewarded with discounts on their health insurance premiums.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3><b>3. Business Domain Dimension<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Going one step further, domain transformation describes how established companies from a specific industry enter another domain.
